O+ FESTIVAL KINGSTON 2022

October 7-9, 2022

Submissions for our 12th Annual O+ Festival are now open!

Applications Open April 8th, 2022

All submissions due by Sunday May 22nd, 2022 at 11:59p.m.

The O+ Festival is a celebration of art, music and wellness that creates a bridge to accessing health care for its participating artists/musicians while providing the community with access to the healing and transformative power of art in all forms. O+ (pronounced Oh Positive) fosters physical, mental and social well-being by connecting visual artists and musicians directly with a coalition of healthcare and wellness providers and resources in a shared vision to nurture the individual and the community. By exchanging the art of medicine for the medicine of art, O+ empowers communities to take control of their collective wellbeing.

O+ Festival Kingston is now accepting submissions from writers, performers, spoken word artists, poets, activists, advocates, and everyone in between for the annual Literary SalO+n. We welcome folks of all ages and levels of experience to read, recite, perform, sing, sign, speak words of all forms, languages and genres. We call annual gathering around the written/spoken word the Literary SalO+n because it’s not a collection of works so much as meeting of minds, voices and perspectives around an experience. We strongly encourage, and may prioritize, original work but are also open to found text, dramatic interpretations, etc. We expect those submitting to provide appropriate and thorough credit for all text that is not your own.

O+ aims to curate work that contributes to or reflects the meaningful juxtaposition between Kingston’s dynamic, multicultural neighborhood communities and compelling, radical, relevant contemporary work in all forms. O+ Festival builds its program around a new theme each year and we invite artists, musicians, instructors and writers to respond to the theme in their proposals.

The O+ Festival will return to Kingston, NY October 7-9, 2022 for the 12th annual celebration of the exchange at the heart of what we do: exchanging the art of medicine for the medicine of art. As everyone imagines a “new normal” after the extraordinary last two years, we ask our community to envision where we are going together.

The theme of the 2022 O+ Festival is SO+mewhere.

The term Somewhere is defined by Merriam Webster as: in, at, from, or to a place unknown or unspecified, to a place symbolizing positive accomplishment or progress,  in the vicinity of, or an undetermined or unnamed place. We welcome our community to join us in imagining what “Somewhere” can look like, feel like, where we are going and what we build together.

Somewhere is an imagined utopia, a place of refuge, a place free of the confines of antiquated structures or arbitrary boundaries. Somewhere is a place we go in our memories of the past, it is being present in the present, and it is a future moment not yet relegated to history. Somewhere is pink neon in the sky, a Stephen Sondheim song, a place we have never been and a place we discover along the way. Somewhere is where we lost or left things along the way, it is a future home not yet found, it is searching, seeking, striving. Somewhere is possibility. It is where we find hope, direction and the inevitability that change is the only constant.

Additional information and reflections on the theme SO+MEWHERE can be found HERE. We look forward to seeing and hearing your interpretations of this theme and to reviewing your work through the lens of all of its meanings.
